A $5 million grant from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation will support a restoration project at the Yampa River and Walton Creek confluence in Steamboat Springs, aimed at improving ecosystem health and resiliency against floods, wildfires, and droughts. The project addresses environmental degradation from past gravel mining, which altered the river’s natural flow and created habitats conducive to nonnative northern pike, impacting local biodiversity. The city has raised a total of $7.9 million for the initiative, including funds from the Colorado Water Conservation Board and city allocations. The design and permitting phases are set to conclude by 2026, with construction expected to wrap up by 2028.
