As Ascension Parish marks the 10th anniversary of the 2016 flood, Parish President Clint Cointment highlights newly signed legislation aimed at enhancing flood risk reduction. Governor Jeff Landry approved House Bill 802 and Senate Bill 367, which establish a dedicated funding source for watershed restoration and flood mitigation projects in the Amite River Basin. This Watershed Restoration and Conservation Fund will support efforts to reclaim and conserve affected areas, particularly from sand mining.
Cointment emphasizes the necessity of turning lessons from the past into actionable projects. Ascension Parish is also acquiring land for stormwater detention basins to manage flood risks better. The Amite River Basin Commission, in collaboration with local governments and the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, plans to identify future restoration initiatives to enhance regional flood resilience.
This legislation is viewed as a pivotal update to flood mitigation efforts, marking significant progress since the 2016 disaster.
