This year’s World Tsunami Awareness Day marks 20 years since the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, which resulted in 225,000 deaths across 14 countries. The event underscored the urgent need for effective tsunami preparedness amid escalating climate change risks, such as rising sea levels and extreme weather. Tsunamis, often resulting from seismic activity, can trigger further hazards like flooding and spread disease in vulnerable coastal regions, emphasizing the necessity for comprehensive risk management.

Following the disaster, the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOTWMS) was established, enhancing warning capabilities for 27 countries. Initiatives like the UN Secretary-General’s “Early Warnings for All” aim to make these systems more inclusive. The ESCAP Multi-Donor Trust Fund has been vital in supporting early warning systems and resilience initiatives in coastal communities.

Key actions for ongoing tsunami preparedness include regional cooperation to share data and best practices, addressing systemic gaps in tsunami warning systems, and securing adequate financing for disaster preparedness. Collaborative efforts in areas like the North-West Indian Ocean have led to significant advancements in risk assessment and evacuation planning. Continued investment in disaster risk reduction is essential for enhancing resilience in Asia and the Pacific against future tsunamis and climate-related threats.
