The Housatonic Valley Association (HVA) has facilitated funding and technical support for Egremont, Great Barrington, and Richmond to secure over $2.7 million from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Community Culvert Grant Program. This initiative aims to address flooding issues and improve wildlife habitat connectivity in Berkshire County. Many culverts in the region are outdated, contributing to flooding and obstructing fish movement, particularly of species like the Eastern Brook Trout.
HVA’s expertise helped identify priority projects for culvert replacement and secure funding for assessments and engineering design. Egremont received $1.03 million for a new box culvert on Blunt Road; Great Barrington secured $925,000 for a culvert at Brush Hill Road; and Richmond obtained $771,000 for a culvert at Sleepy Hollow Road. These projects enhance community safety and environmental health, signaling a commitment to infrastructure resilience and ecological restoration. For more information, visit HVA’s website.
