The European Geosciences Union (EGU) conference, Europe’s largest geosciences event, serves as a key platform for sharing innovative research related to earth, climate change, and natural hazards. The April 2023 conference in Vienna attracted over 18,800 attendees from 107 countries, showcasing significant presentations that provide insights beneficial to industries such as insurance, especially in developing solutions for resilience amidst climate-driven challenges.

Key discussions addressed the impacts of climate change on extreme weather events, highlighting urgent areas such as water supply monitoring and the increasing occurrence of compound dry-hot events. Wildfire risk assessment also gained attention, with new methodologies proposed to evaluate interrelated risks from droughts to floods and other disasters, emphasizing the interconnectedness of environmental, human, and economic well-being.

Efforts like the MYRIAD-EU project aim to improve multi-hazard preparedness through stochastic event modeling. The significance of community resilience, informed decision-making, and timely access to environmental data were underscored to enhance risk assessment and adaptive responses in the face of climate change challenges.
