On December 18, Russell County faced two significant grass fires that burned approximately 2,000 acres. Fortunately, only a few structures were threatened, and no damage or injuries occurred. The first fire ignited due to power lines amid 70 mph winds, prompting a countywide emergency response. A second fire was sparked by a fire truck accident near Bunker Hill, leading to a verbal disaster declaration and mutual aid from neighboring counties. Both fires were brought under control by late afternoon. Meanwhile, other fires burned in Reno and Cowley counties, with successful containment efforts and minimal damage reported. Crews continued monitoring hot spots overnight.
