The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) released its 2020 report card on the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed, granting a grade of B- to the watershed and a C to the Bay, an improvement for both. Key successes include better dissolved oxygen and nitrogen levels, but deteriorations in chlorophyll and phosphorus were noted. The analysis introduced new indicators such as protected lands and walkability, highlighting environmental justice, especially in disadvantaged communities. The report emphasized the significance of parks during the pandemic. Overall, UMCES aims to enhance its focus on social indicators, supported by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Despite monitoring disruptions during the pandemic, reduced nitrogen levels were observed, fostering hope for the Bay’s future.
