Brian Cooper from Trout Unlimited and Jon Cunningham from the Department of Environmental Protection hosted an informational session in Clarence about abandoned mine drainage (AMD) restoration in the Beech Creek Watershed, crucial for preserving the area’s native brook trout populations. The session targeted property owners with abandoned mine features, emphasizing that removing these structures and adding lime can reduce acid levels in the water. Treatment methods include passive systems with ponds and wetlands to neutralize acid, as well as active methods involving lime application.
The community showed strong support for the restoration, with attendees expressing hope for revitalizing fishing opportunities in the stream. Cooper highlighted the importance of collaboration for achieving clean water faster than natural geological processes. For further information, residents were encouraged to contact Trout Unlimited and local conservation districts.
