The Yahara WINS Watershed Carbon Project has achieved a milestone as the first U.S. project to generate verified carbon credits using a new methodology focused on watershed conservation. In January, 24,143 carbon credits were issued, recognizing greenhouse gas emissions avoided through the district’s adaptive management approach to phosphorus compliance. Instead of a costly wastewater treatment facility, Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) opted for conservation, which is expected to prevent about 73,000 tons of carbon emissions over 20 years. This approach positions watershed conservation as a viable alternative for utilities to meet regulations while contributing to climate goals. MSSD has already sold credits to multiple organizations, projecting approximately $270,000 in revenue through 2036.
