Summary:

Construction to remove two obsolete dams on the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River Water Trail in Bedford, PA, will begin on August 11. The project, led by American Rivers, aims to enhance the local ecosystem and mitigate flooding issues exacerbated by the dams. A public event, the “Twilight Picnic,” will take place on August 14 at the Paul Reighard Dam site, allowing community members to observe the work and ask questions.

Local officials highlight the detrimental effects of the dams on safety and community development. Removing the dams will reconnect over 156 miles of river, supporting ecological restoration in the Juniata River system and Chesapeake Bay watershed. The project, backed by various conservation organizations and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, reflects Pennsylvania’s leadership in dam removal efforts.

Signs indicate unsafe areas during construction, reminding visitors to respect safety precautions. Historically, the removal of over 2,000 dams nationwide has improved public safety and habitat, contributing significantly to local economies.

American Rivers focuses on ensuring clean, healthy rivers, emphasizing the importance of such projects for communal well-being and environmental health.
