The First Thunder Fire erupted on September 2, 2024, and became one of the most intense wildfires in the Black Hills, prompting a significant response from various firefighting agencies. A change in wind direction helped contain the fire by directing it back onto previously burned land. Fortunately, it did not reach West Rapid, although evacuations were considered. A year later, the burn scar is evident southeast of Commissary Point, with minimal tree coverage and flourishing grasses and flowers. Wildfires like this are rare in the area, highlighting the importance of fire safety in forested regions.
