In 2025, Utah experienced a severe wildfire season with nearly 165,000 acres burned, marking the highest acreage since 2020 and surpassing the combined totals of the previous three years. The suppression of 1,161 wildfires cost approximately $191.8 million, primarily covered by federal funds ($160.6 million). Major fires, such as the Monroe Canyon Fire, contributed significantly to these costs. Drought and windy conditions exacerbated fire behavior, but firefighters managed to contain 92% of fires to under 10 acres. Utah plans to enhance wildfire risk management through a partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and initiatives aimed at reducing human-caused fires, which were responsible for a significant portion of the wildfires.
