The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University announced a $5 million research initiative, the Delaware Watershed Research Fund, to address environmental issues affecting the Delaware River and its surrounding areas, particularly regarding climate change, agricultural runoff, and water quality technology. This initiative builds on the Delaware River Watershed Initiative, which involves over 50 organizations working to monitor and restore watershed conditions. The fund will support research into key questions about watershed and waterway relationships. The effort aims to inform and enhance conservation strategies for the river, which notably serves as a drinking water source for 15 million people and supports significant economic activities. Grant applications will be reviewed and announced in spring 2016.
