Florida is experiencing an unprecedented fire season, with firefighters deployed statewide to combat wildfires fueled by drought, low humidity, and strong winds. Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson highlighted that the situation is among the worst in decades, with over 1,500 wildfires affecting nearly 100,000 acres early in 2026.

As conditions worsen and rainfall remains low, a coalition of first responder organizations is advocating for improved pension benefits for first responders. Currently, the lack of cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) diminishes the value of their pensions. Changes in 2011 suspended COLA for new hires, and despite a legislative review promise in 2016, this suspension continues.

The coalition stresses that fair retirement benefits are essential to retain skilled professionals who ensure community safety. They urge Floridians to support these dedicated workers in recognition of their ongoing service.
