The Amite River Basin Commission (ARBC) announced that the Fiscal Year 2026-2027 state budget includes unprecedented investments for flood risk reduction, watershed restoration, and the ARBC Master Plan’s implementation. With the Governor’s approval of HB 1 and HB 2, the budget allocates $1 million for ARBC operations and $67 million in Capital Outlay for the Upper Amite Restoration Project.
ARBC President John Clark highlighted the collaboration between the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) and ARBC to improve flood protection strategies. Vice President Jack Harris noted this funding represents the largest state commitment to flood protection in the Capital Region’s history, benefiting all seven parishes in the Amite River Basin.
Current projects include key initiatives like the Upper Amite Restoration Project and others totaling over $100 million. ARBC leaders acknowledged state legislators for their role in securing this funding, aimed at enhancing regional flood resilience, especially in light of the lessons learned from the devastating 2016 floods.
The ARBC’s mission involves flood damage mitigation and responsible watershed management, crucial for protecting communities in the Capital Region.
