The Watershed Institute in Pennington, New Jersey, marks its 75th anniversary this year, focusing on water conservation and environmental protection through advocacy, science, and education. Established in 1949 as the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association by David H. McAlpin and Kathleen Peyton, the Institute has significantly expanded its efforts, including donations of land, the introduction of programs like StreamWatch, and the development of a butterfly house and River-Friendly certification. Executive Director Jim Waltman, who joined in 2005, aims to enhance the organization’s advocacy and outreach beyond local boundaries. The Watershed Institute, now spanning 950 acres, celebrates its anniversary with a jubilee event on October 5, alongside various educational initiatives and future projects involving stream monitoring and land preservation, including adding 90 acres to its reserve.
