The Alberta government’s amendment to riparian restoration regulations is praised for reducing red tape and streamlining processes for small organizations. Andrew Renaux, CEO of Leaf Ninjas, notes that the change will decrease flood and drought risks, enhancing watershed protection. Previously, the need for a temporary diversion licence hindered restoration efforts, adding costs and delays. The new rules allow small projects to use up to 100 cubic metres of water daily for plant growth without a licence. Government officials argue this will lead to healthier ecosystems and more successful restoration. The amendment aligns with Alberta’s Watershed Resiliency and Restoration Program, which funds riverbank restoration projects. This change aims to empower communities and focus on effective ecological restoration.
