Arizona State University students are using AI and cutting-edge technology to create immersive 3D photos and videos of wildfire aftermath in Los Angeles. This initiative, part of the Narrative and Emerging Media Program, aims to provide a compelling perspective on the devastation caused by recent fires, which burned 40,000 acres and destroyed over 16,000 buildings. Grad student Ashley Buschhorn, herself an evacuee, described the process involving “Gaussian Splat” technology that captures images from multiple angles to create detailed 3D models of the affected areas.

The team also produced 360-degree videos showing before-and-after comparisons of neighborhoods. Program leader Nonny de la Pena, who lost her studio in a fire, hopes these tools will assist fire victims in filing insurance claims, providing invaluable evidence of losses.
