Wildfires are significantly impacting the Carolinas and Georgia, prompting “increased fire danger” warnings as winds rise and humidity drops. The Carolina Forest fire, the largest blaze, has consumed over 2,000 acres near Myrtle Beach and is only 30% contained. Despite the proximity of wildfires, Myrtle Beach remains open to visitors. A statewide burn ban is in effect, and South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency amid 175 recorded fires. Another wildfire has affected nearly 600 acres in North Carolina’s Polk County, now 63% contained. Residents report health issues due to smoke, and the North Carolina Forest Service faces staffing shortages with over 100 vacancies. Additionally, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein warned residents to prepare for severe weather, including storms and potential tornadoes, as further challenges loom.
