Crews recently relocated fish from the old channel of the Jocko River to a newly restored channel as part of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes’ Bison Range Reach Restoration Project. This initiative aims to shift the river from a confined path to a more natural, floodplain-connected route, enhancing habitats for native fish and wildlife. Teams from various organizations worked together to rescue hundreds of fish, including cutthroat trout, preventing them from being stranded. The project, which is expected to improve habitats and support bull trout recovery, includes creating side channels, planting vegetation, and restoring floodplain connections. Completion of Phase 1 occurred in 2025, with Phase 2 anticipated by 2027. This work is critical for restoring natural river processes and habitats.
