The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) released its 20th annual Chesapeake Bay and Watershed Report Card, revealing that the Bay received a C+ grade, the highest in 40 years. The report assesses ecological, social, and economic indicators across the watershed, highlighting long-term improvements driven by partnerships among scientists, governments, and local communities. Eight of the fifteen Bay regions showed improving health, with the Lower Bay achieving a record B+ score. For the first time, watershed-wide water quality trends indicated overall improvement, although the Lower Eastern Shore and Lower James regions showed declines. UMCES emphasizes that ongoing science-based restoration efforts are crucial for maintaining this progress. The report card serves as a vital tool for informing policymakers and guiding future environmental management efforts across the Chesapeake Bay.
