As the wildfire season approaches, Austin and Travis County officials are urging residents to prepare. Austin ranks fifth in U.S. cities most vulnerable to wildfires, prompting efforts that include firefighter training, new emergency stations, and improved vegetation management. Over half of Austin’s habitable land is now in high-risk areas.

Officials advocate for creating “defensible spaces” around homes and suggest residents follow the “3 Cs”: check for fire risks, clear away potential fuels, and communicate with neighbors. Additional recommendations include signing up for emergency alerts, preparing evacuation routes, and monitoring fire weather conditions. Mayor Kirk Watson and Travis County Judge Andy Brown highlighted the urgent need for preparation, citing the unique wildfire risks in Central Texas.

Residents are encouraged to request free evaluations from the fire department and stay vigilant to prevent accidents during high-risk conditions. The message from officials is clear: preparation is critical to mitigate wildfire threats.
