Beach scraping at Fire Island National Seashore involves reshaping beaches and dunes using heavy machinery to redistribute sediment. This process mimics natural recovery but accelerates it, often creating berms to protect properties from erosion and storms. While scraping has been done in private areas, it impacts the park’s coastal resources and alters shoreline morphology. A 2010 study found that man-made dunes enhance beach material transport along the shore, causing downcoast accretion. Although the ecological effects of beach scraping are not fully understood, careful timing could mitigate impacts on seasonal nesting species.
