New York’s environmental officials warn of increased wildfire risk due to dry conditions, urging residents to be cautious with outdoor burning. The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) reports elevated fire danger levels statewide, likely lasting through October. Since August, 53 fires have occurred, primarily from campfires that weren’t properly extinguished.

Officials recommend avoiding burning if possible and emphasize safe extinguishing tactics, such as dousing with water and stirring coals. Important fire safety tips include never leaving fires unattended, properly discarding ashes, and using spark arrestors. The DEC provides daily updates on fire danger levels and safety resources on its website. If a wildfire is spotted, call 911, and report unattended campfires at 1-833-NYS-RANGERS.
