On August 26, Matt Acre, a research fisheries biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, showcased his work during a bus tour organized by Cuyahoga River AOC in Summit County. The event aimed to highlight local restoration projects supported by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) and involved local officials and environmental organizations.
Acre performed surgery on a Northern Pike, implanting a radio tag to track its movements within the Cuyahoga River, which is being monitored for improved environmental health due to restoration efforts. Other tour stops included the Little Cuyahoga River Memorial Parkway Restoration and sediment cleanup at Gorge Metro Park, demonstrating initiatives funded by the GLRI.
The Cuyahoga River AOC aims to address beneficial use impairments, with six issues already resolved since 2017. Residents were encouraged to participate in local restoration efforts, like creating rain gardens, picking up pet waste, and planting along stream banks to support the river’s ecosystem.
