The Eel River historically supported robust salmon populations, but dams and environmental degradation have adversely affected them. Recent efforts, led by CalTrout and partners, aim to rejuvenate the river, especially after PG&E submitted a plan to remove Scott and Cape Horn dams, reconnecting vital spawning habitats.

Monitoring initiatives track juvenile salmon and identify threats, particularly from invasive Sacramento pikeminnow, which harm salmon survival rates. This year saw a record removal of 2,888 pikeminnow, aiming to alleviate predation pressures. Restoration projects span the watershed, restoring habitats and engaging local communities, culminating in events like the Eel River Expo.

Ongoing efforts focus on enhancing salmon habitats and ensuring the river’s ecological integrity for future generations. The movement emphasizes the necessity of continued advocacy, scientific funding, and community support for a flourishing Eel River watershed.
