In Hampton, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation has launched the “Roots to Reef” initiative, aiming to combat climate change by creating its largest living shoreline integrated with oyster reefs. This project addresses pollution and erosion threats along the 3.2-mile Hampton River, which serves a densely populated area.

Living shorelines, which utilize natural elements like oyster reefs and native plants, offer sustainable protection against storms and pollution compared to traditional seawalls. This initiative includes placing 5,584 oyster castles and other materials aimed at enhancing water quality and marine habitat.

Kati Grigsby, CBF’s Urban Restoration Coordinator, emphasizes the initiative’s role in creating a resilient ecosystem that adapts to rising sea levels. The project encourages further volunteer participation to enhance its impact.
