Kula resident Thomas Liu, 85, has rebuilt his home after the 2023 wildfire that destroyed it and 25 other homes. His decision to rebuild was influenced by the support he received from neighbors and community organizations. The Kula Community Watershed Alliance is assisting in clearing hazardous vegetation and replanting native species to prevent future fires. They established a 60-foot firebreak and are collaborating on a long-term land management plan. Additionally, Malama Kula is implementing a green waste collection program to reduce wildfire fuel and create firebreaks. The Kula Community Association has requested state assistance for water tanks to combat future fires, emphasizing the need for effective solutions beyond helicopter dip tanks.
