The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has rebranded its Chesapeake and Coastal Service as Watershed and Climate Services (WCS), effective May 13, 2025. This change reflects a broader mission to tackle climate change and watershed restoration statewide. DNR Secretary Josh Kurtz emphasized the urgency of addressing climate impacts like flooding and rising sea levels.

WCS aims to strengthen shorelines, fund stream restorations, and coordinate significant projects under the Whole Watershed Act, focusing on comprehensive water management across all Maryland watersheds. Dr. Natalie Snider noted the interconnectedness of ecosystems and communities throughout the state.

WCS collaborates with various organizations to address these challenges, offering resources and expertise to enhance sustainability and climate resilience. The rebranding aims to build on Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts while broadening its impact, ultimately positioning Maryland as a leader in regional conservation and proactive climate measures.
