The Healey-Driscoll Administration has announced $2.1 million in grants to support 17 river and wetland restoration projects across Massachusetts, funded by the Department of Fish and Game’s Division of Ecological Restoration. These initiatives aim to enhance climate resilience, reduce flood risks, improve water quality, and restore wildlife habitats. Secretary Rebecca Tepper emphasized that wetland restoration saves money and aids community safety.

The grants, awarded through a competitive process, target various projects such as dam removals, culvert replacements, and the restoration of former cranberry farms into healthy wetlands. Projects include the Abbey Brook Restoration in Chicopee, Becker Pond Dam Removal in Mount Washington, and the Wheelwright Pond Dam Removal, which will reconnect significant freshwater habitats. This funding aims to bolster ecological, social, and economic benefits statewide. Local officials expressed gratitude, highlighting the importance of these initiatives for environmental preservation and community resilience.
