The Tennessee River Valley Stewardship Council announced the successful release of 10,000 walleye into the Pigeon River as part of ongoing restoration efforts to enhance aquatic biodiversity. The river, once heavily polluted by the Pactiv Evergreen paper mill, has seen water quality improvements, allowing for the reintroduction of native fish species. This initiative fosters sustainable fishing and promotes various recreational activities, including angling and whitewater rafting. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, in collaboration with local partners, focuses on habitat restoration and water quality monitoring, ensuring the river remains a valuable resource. The TRV Stewardship Council aims to enhance community stewardship, local business development, and the region’s recreational potential.
