A new study predicts that atmospheric rivers will lead to increased and more severe rainfall in mountainous regions of East Asia due to climate change. These moisture-laden weather systems can cause rapid flooding when they encounter mountain ranges. Researchers found that rainfall events will become more frequent and intense, particularly affecting areas like Japan, Taiwan, northeastern China, and the Korean Peninsula, especially on the southwestern slopes of the Japanese Alps. The study utilized climate models to project conditions up to 2090, highlighting the connection between climate warming and the behavior of atmospheric rivers. While increased rainfall may benefit some regions, it poses risks of extreme flooding in others. Similar patterns of intensified precipitation may be observed globally, particularly in mid-latitude regions with steep mountains. The research is published in Geophysical Research Letters.
