U.S. EPA Mid-Atlantic Administrator Amy Van Blarcom-Lackey toured Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley, focusing on water infrastructure, land restoration, and energy initiatives.

Key highlights included:

  • Land Restoration: Van Blarcom-Lackey reviewed the Nanticoke Creek Watershed Restoration Project, supported by a $1.9 million EPA grant, aimed at improving water quality and aquatic habitats affected by acid mine drainage.

  • Wastewater Management: She visited the Lackawanna River Basin Sewer Authority and Scranton Wastewater Treatment Plant, discussing pollution control strategies and ongoing efforts to reduce sewer overflows.

  • Energy Production: The tour emphasized renewable energy initiatives at the Archaea Energy Assai Facility and the Invenergy Lackawanna Energy Center, highlighting methane recovery and high-efficiency energy generation.

Van Blarcom-Lackey’s visit aimed to leverage federal support for enhancing local environmental management and public health.
