As Pennsylvania approaches its spring wildfire season, three volunteer fire companies—Hepburn Township ($13,525), Waterville ($6,000), and Mildred ($15,000)—have received grants to enhance their wildfire protection capabilities. State Rep. Joe Hamm emphasized the importance of equipping rural fire companies to ensure community safety. These grants, administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and supported by the USDA Forest Service, fund essential equipment like wildfire suppression gear, training, and communication tools. The program has distributed over $14 million since its inception in 1982 to aid wildfire protection efforts statewide.
