Students from Lahainaluna High’s Hawaiian language immersion school participated in restoration efforts at the Puʻu Kukui watershed in West Maui. They began their day with protocols, weeding and planting native species. The watershed, over 9,000 acres, is managed by Aloha Puʻu Kukui and The Nature Conservancy, focusing on water capture and managing the entire ecosystem from mountain to ocean. Student Kaliko Kalani Teruya emphasized learning about the importance of native species, while his peer Aina Kapu noted the cultural significance of their actions. The initiative aims to sustain the land’s health and educate the next generation.
