Catholic Bishop Larry Silva blessed the start of the Hale Pilina project in Kahului, Maui, aimed at offering affordable housing. This 178-unit development will prioritize families displaced by the 2023 Lahaina wildfire, which significantly increased rental prices. Catholic Charities Hawai’i president Tina Andrade highlighted the urgent need for affordable housing, stating that Hale Pilina symbolizes hope and support for rebuilding lives.

The project will cater to households earning 30% to 60% of Maui’s median income, with estimated monthly rents ranging from $757 to $1,818. Expected completion is in the second quarter of 2027, adding to Catholic Charities’ statewide total of 670 units. Funded through the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program, the project costs about $114.6 million. Reports indicate many displaced residents remain in temporary housing, with rents still much higher than pre-fire levels.
