The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is launching the “Roots to Reef” initiative in Hampton to combat climate change by creating its largest living shoreline integrated with oyster reefs. The project involves planting 5,584 oyster castles and other materials along the Hampton River, which faces pollution from the dense local population. Unlike traditional seawalls, living shorelines naturally evolve and effectively filter pollutants, while providing habitats for marine life. The initiative represents a collaboration between CBF’s Oyster and Urban Restoration Teams to enhance the river’s ecosystem resilience. Volunteers are needed to support this important work.
