In 2020, extreme weather and geophysical events displaced 30.7 million people, three times more than the 9.8 million displaced by war and conflict, despite escalating violence in regions like Ethiopia and Burkina Faso. Jan Egeland of the Norwegian Refugee Council remarked on the alarming rate of displacement, with someone fleeing their home every second. Notably, Cyclone Amphan forced nearly five million to evacuate across Bangladesh, India, and Myanmar. The pandemic complicated these crises, as fears of infection led fewer people to seek emergency shelters. Alexandra Bilak emphasized the need for political will and local solutions to address interconnected issues like climate change and conflict. The UK also faces climate-related displacement, with communities like Fairbourne in Wales warned of forced evacuation by 2054 due to rising sea levels.
