One year after devastating fires in Pacific Palisades and Altadena, California, reconstruction is slow, with only about 500 of the 16,000 lost structures under development and very few completed. Karen Martinez has begun rebuilding her Malibu home using fire-resistant materials, emphasizing the need for better construction practices and educating others in her community. Meanwhile, 80% of fire survivors remain displaced, including chef Tyler Wells, who, despite losing his home, reopened his restaurant to support his staff and the community. Insurers have largely failed to provide necessary funds, leaving many survivors in limbo. Local officials stress the need for federal support as optimism grows among some fire victims who see opportunities in rebuilding.
