In the wake of devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, concerns over home insurance have emerged in Washington state, as some companies are not renewing policies in wildfire-prone areas. The Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner reported around 7,000 homeowners’ policies were not renewed this year, although the exact locations are unknown. They are seeking data from insurers to better understand these trends. Companies evaluate wildfire risks based on the likelihood of a home’s ignition. If a policy is dropped, homeowners often have limited recourse and should consider shopping around for new insurance. Effective July 1, notice periods for cancellations will increase from 45 to 60 days. The state offers a basic “FAIR plan” to help those struggling to find coverage. It’s crucial for homeowners to ensure their properties are adequately insured to cover rebuilding costs after a fire. Regular discussions with insurance providers can help maintain sufficient coverage.
