Local firefighting agencies in Bexar County are on high alert this week due to gusty winds increasing wildfire risks. A cold front recently lowered humidity levels to 15%, exacerbating dry conditions from a six-year drought. Consequently, Bexar County Commissioners have extended a burn ban for 90 days, covering Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s holidays. Deputy County Fire Marshal John Ortega Jr. noted that burn bans have reduced grass fires since August. Commissioner Tommy Calvert raised concerns about losing a firefighting bulldozer and emphasized the need for replacement, especially with potential fire risks from New Year’s Eve fireworks.
