Climate change is expected to worsen extreme weather events, leading to severe snowstorms, heavy rainfall, and wildfires that can damage transport infrastructure and cost an estimated €29 billion annually. Dr. Angelos Amditis from the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) in Greece emphasizes the need for real-time information to manage these crises. His project RESIST focuses on ensuring critical transport routes, such as the T9 bridge in Greece and the Saint Petronilla tunnel in Italy, can withstand extreme weather and cyber-attacks. The project will utilize drones and sensors to monitor conditions and help build alternative communication networks for emergency responses.

Additionally, Dr. Belén Riveiro from the University of Vigo leads the SAFEWAY project, which aims to improve road and rail resilience across Europe to minimize emergency response time and expedite repairs. Research efforts will gather real-time data and assess risks from various weather-related events, using technologies like remote sensing and social media monitoring. The projects underscore the growing severity of climate change impacts on transportation and the need for proactive measures.
