The Santa Lucia Conservancy has initiated a wildfire resilience workforce program, funded by a NOAA grant, to diminish fire risks on the Central Coast. Crews are addressing fire hazards, notably by managing the spread of flammable French broom, which can’t be fully eradicated. The program includes conservation grazing with cattle and a prescribed fire initiative in collaboration with Cal Fire. Annually, the conservancy conducts two to four controlled burns to lower dry fuels and enhance ecological health. Executive Director Jamison Watts stressed the importance of regular preventive work to avoid dangerous fuel accumulation.
