In Spokane, Washington, firefighters are making progress on wildfires that have forced the evacuation of around 67,000 people and destroyed approximately 850 buildings. Cooler weather has aided containment efforts around three significant fires, including the Old Trails Fire, which was deliberately set; the suspected arsonist has been arrested. However, rising temperatures and lower humidity are expected soon.

Many evacuees remain uncertain about returning home, as some areas still lack power and internet. The ongoing wildfires are part of a larger crisis in the Western U.S., with over 16 uncontained fires impacting more than 672 square miles. Federal officials prioritized firefighting resources for the region amid what is projected to be one of the worst fire seasons in Washington’s history.
