The Elk River, once a thriving ecosystem supporting salmon and elk populations, has suffered significant degradation due to historical human activities such as diking, draining, and logging. These actions have led to habitat loss, sedimentation, and flooding, resulting in the river being legally recognized as impaired under the Clean Water Act. (lostcoastoutpost.com)

In response, California Trout (CalTrout) has initiated an ambitious restoration project aimed at revitalizing the river’s health. The first phase focuses on replacing outdated tidal infrastructure and restoring habitats in areas previously used for agriculture. This includes removing derelict structures, regrading ditches, and enhancing tidal sloughs to improve connectivity with mainstem channels. The project also aims to create backwater features for seasonal waterfowl and winter salmonid rearing habitat, manage invasive vegetation, and expand native plant communities. (lostcoastoutpost.com)

The restoration efforts are designed to address flooding issues, protect agricultural lands from saltwater intrusion, and enhance public access to the area. The project has received support from local property owners, the Wiyot Tribe, and various environmental organizations. The timeline for the project spans up to ten years, with construction expected to begin in the summer of 2026, contingent upon securing necessary funding. (lostcoastoutpost.com)

Overall, the restoration of the Elk River represents a collaborative effort to heal a century of environmental damage and restore this vital ecosystem for future generations.
