Volunteers are needed to collect reproductive shoots from underwater plants containing ripe seeds. These shoots will be processed in water tanks for future planting. Each collection trip lasts 4-5 hours, starting near 6493 Sunnyside Road, Cape Charles, VA. New volunteers are encouraged to participate at least twice, as collection days may vary due to weather. For details, contact Jen Dalke at The Nature Conservancy.
In collaboration with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and other partners, the program has distributed over 72 million seeds across 600 acres to enhance the natural spread of eelgrass, which currently covers nearly 9,000 acres in various bays. The initiative serves as a model for global marine ecosystem restoration.
