Researchers are utilizing drone technology to analyze the changes in the landscape caused by the Calgary floods two years ago. The study, which began in 2012, aimed to map river systems and fish habitats in the Elbow River. After the 2013 floods, the team compared pre- and post-flood 3-D maps, revealing significant alterations, including up to 150 meters of bank erosion. The findings, published in the journal Earth Surface Processes and Landforms, indicate that future floods would need to be significantly large to cause similar changes. The researchers, including those from the University of Calgary and the University of British Columbia, aim to enhance drone technology for disaster management purposes.
