In Eagle, Wisconsin, a chain of man-made ponds is being filled in to restore the Mukwonago River Watershed. The Nature Conservancy of Wisconsin and Ducks Unlimited are working to return the area to its natural state, as the artificial ponds raised water temperatures, negatively affecting wildlife. The project involves leveling 80 acres at Lulu Lake Preserve, re-establishing the original stream and native vegetation, which will improve habitat for fish and freshwater mussels that depend on cooler water. This restoration is also vital for human health, given that many U.S. communities rely on clean water from river systems.
