Governor Gavin Newsom has issued an executive order to expedite recovery from the recent Los Angeles-area firestorms. This order suspends California Coastal Act permitting requirements, facilitating rebuilding efforts, and relaxes rules for displaced residents to access hotels and short-term rentals during their recovery. It clarifies that earlier suspended permitting requirements remain unenforceable and directs the California Coastal Commission to avoid issuing conflicting guidance that could delay rebuilding. Additionally, survivors can stay in temporary accommodations beyond 30 days without tenant reclassification until March 8, 2025. Newsom’s measures also include mobilizing federal debris removal teams, enhancing anti-price-gouging protections, and allocating over $2.5 billion in state aid for recovery.
