The DOE Watershed Function Scientific Focus Area (SFA) project investigates climate change impacts in high-mountain regions, particularly along the East River catchment in Colorado. Ecologist Heidi Steltzer, part of the team and a lead author for the IPCC’s Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate, examines how changes in snowpack and snowmelt affect water supplies. This IPCC report is notable for including a chapter on mountains for the first time since 1996, addressing issues like glacier mass loss and altered water cycles.

Steltzer highlights the importance of mountain systems for drinking water, agriculture, and energy. The report discusses inconsistencies in snowfall patterns, emphasizing their implications for plant growth, microbial processes, and water governance. Recent findings indicate that climate change is disrupting traditional water supply dynamics, affecting both quality and availability.

Ultimately, the report aims to raise awareness about mountain ecosystems and their crucial role for billions while underscoring the urgent need for attention to remote climate changes and their cascading effects on global water resources.
